South Dakota is the place to see in 2015! | Powder House Lodge

 – By

Each year millions of people travel to South Dakota to experience the beauty and history of the Black Hills region, and after recently being named one of the top places to visit in 2015, this year will be no exception!

The Black Hills of South Dakota are home to popular attractions such as Mount Rushmore National Monument, Crazy Horse Memorial, and many state & national parks that attract visitors each year to western South Dakota, as well as many popular annual events that are very popular with visitors from around the world. Two of the more renowned and definitely more “wild” events coming up in 2015 are celebrating big milestones and both are already predicting record attendance for 2015, the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Recently named the Top Event in North America by the American Bus Association and on its way to celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup showcases the deep western heritage of South Dakota with an authentic roundup of the park’s herd of wild bison. Visitors can experience the rumbling ground and dust filled air as cowboys and cowgirls saddle up and ride through the park on horseback to gather nearly 1,500 head of bison. This exciting event attracts more than 14,000 people annually and is an integral part of the park’s management plan for maintaining a healthy bison herd. Once the animals have been successfully rounded up, park members can begin to work sorting the bison, vaccinating animals, and branding new calves. This exciting event is free to attend, however reservations are not accepted and attendees often begin lining up at the park entrance in the early hours of the morning to ensure a good viewing spot for the event!

Perhaps the largest and most popular event of the Black Hills, the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is expecting to draw nearly 1 million people to the region for the event’s 75th anniversary in 2015. Celebrated by motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world, visitors flock to the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally for reasons of nostalgia, comradery, and the opportunity to explore the scenery that this area has to offer from the perspective of a motorcycle. Whether you plan on visiting the Black Hills to attend the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally or you will be in the area during this event for other reasons, you will need to make your reservations well in advance! Lodging for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally can fill up quickly but there is always a chance that cancellations and openings will arise!

In addition to the larger-than-life monuments and popular events that draw many visitors to South Dakota each year, the Black Hills are also a wonderful place to get out and explore the wild and scenic beauty that can be found along miles of winding roads, hiking trails, and bike paths that meander through the area. The summer season is the peak time for visitors to explore this area and Black Hills lodging options can fill up well before the summer vacation season arrives which is why it is never too early to book your room or cabin at the Powder House Lodge! In addition to our spacious Black Hills motel, we also offer a wide range of cabins that can sleep anywhere from 2 – 13 people comfortably.
