Boasting 36 miles of shoreline and an average summer water temperature of 66°F, Angostura Reservoir is a prime destination for those looking to spend a day frolicking in the waves, relaxing on a boat or trying their hand at hooking the lake’s abundant supply of fish. And with the recreation area also offering a disk golf course, trails for hikers and bicyclers, and areas to play volleyball, there is plenty of excitement out of the water as well. Located about an hour south of the Powder House Lodge, this Black Hills lake is sure to cure your craving for some fun in the sun.

  • Daily - $6 per vehicle
  • Annual - $30 for the first vehicle, $15 for the second vehicle

Recreation

  • Boating – Four boat ramps provided on site.
  • Canoeing and Kayaking
  • Disk Golf Course
  • Fishing – A large variety of fish inhabit the reservoir and are available to catch, including crappie, largemouth bass, northern pike, perch, smallmouth bass and walleye. There is an ADA accessible fishing dock available on site, as well as two fish cleaning stations. Visit SD Game, Fish and Parks to obtain a fishing license for use during your stay.
  • Hiking and Biking – Explore the area on the hiking and biking trails that are provided. Both trails are 1.2 miles and offer a great way to get in some exercise while enjoying the scenery at Angostura Reservoir.

  • Swimming – Multiple designated, sandy swim beaches are located along the shorelines.
  • Volleyball
  • Youth Nature Day Camp - During the summer months, a free day camp for kids ages 7-12 is held on the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. at Shelter #2. Kids, and any parents that choose to also attend, are asked to wear clothes that can get wet, and bring sunscreen, a water bottle and a light snack. Lessons will be given in everything from how to catch and clean a fish, to how to identify different animal tracks. For more information on the camp, call 605-745-6996.

Amenities Offered

  • ADA-Accessibility– The campground, cabins and one of the fishing docks are ADA accessible.
  • Dining – Opened in 2016, Inferno on the Beach is Angostura Reservoir’s full-service bar and restaurant. It’s located on the main swim beach and features gourmet pizzas, salads, beer, wine and cocktails.
  • Equipment Rentals – Canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and even fishing rods are available for rent.
  • Full-Service Marina
  • Lodging – Four campgrounds are available May through September, providing a total of 169 electrical and non-electrical campsites. There are also 12 cabins for rent that sleep 4-5 people.
  • Picnic Shelters
  • Restrooms – Enjoy the conveniences of showers and flushable toilets during your outdoor excursion at this Black Hills lake.

Fun Facts

  • The Angostura Dam was built in 1949 for irrigation purposes.
  • Those that enjoy bird-watching will love Angostura; since it’s the only large body of water in the area, it serves as an important location for migratory birds.
  • Angostura means “narrows” in Spanish.
  • The reservoir has a maximum depth of 75 feet.
