America's Founding Fathers Exhibit
America’s Founding Fathers Exhibit
For a history lesson unlike any you’ve experienced before, visit America’s Founding Fathers Exhibit during your next stay in the Black Hills. Located only 14 minutes from the Powder House Lodge, the showcase is a fascinating tribute to the signers of the Declaration of Independence.
America’s Founding Fathers Exhibit was started by Don Perdue, who is also the mind behind the 42 bronze statues that line downtown Rapid City, known as the “City of Presidents”. Feeling it is important for Americans to know the history behind the United States’ battle of independence against Britain, Perdue envisioned an interesting way for visitors to learn about the subject. Enlisting the help of four local artists, he set out to make a life-size recreation of the famous John Trumbull painting “The Declaration of Independence”, which depicts the moment that Congress was presented the soon-to-be historic document by the five men who drafted it.
Housed in a building modeled after Independence Hall, the large, realistic figures come to life during the exhibit’s heart-pounding light and sound show. Featuring loud booms and bright flashes of light, the presentation will transport you to that critical moment in history, where you’ll witness the dramatic moments that led to the United States declaring its independence.
The exhibit even offers the chance to get hands-on during your visit. A replica of the Liberty Bell sits outside of the front door to greet you on your way in and out, and offers you the chance to feel what it’s like to ring the gigantic bell. Those that are 16 years of age and older will love the opportunity to shoot an authentic Revolutionary War-era long rifle at the gun range, and will receive three shots for just $20.
Whether you’re a history buff, art lover, or are simply looking for fun family vacation ideas that offer an entertaining educational experience, you’re sure to walk away with a newfound appreciation for the nation’s founding fathers after visiting this Black Hills destination.
